How Higher Education Research Serve School and Society – Theory and Practice of Institutional Research

ABSTRACT

Institutional Research is the study of higher education organizations or universities. Its purpose is to improve school management and advise on the formulation of university policies by providing useful information and consultation for colleges and universities. Since its establishment seven years ago, the Discipline Evaluation Center of Dalian University of Technology has offered consulting services for school development and national "Double First-Class" construction through series of research. The research includes the formulation of the construction scheme of first-class universities, benchmarking analysis of domestic and foreign universities, discipline diagnosis and consulting analysis, and Postgraduate Cultivation survey. Meanwhile, the center has provided a wide range of research, consultation, and analysis for higher education management departments and universities within the region. This report discusses the future development trend of institutional research and the analysis tools often used in institutional research.

Jiang Hua, Dean, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Dalian University of Technology Graduate School of Education; Director of the Discipline Evaluation Center of Dalian University of Technology; Director of the "Educational Evaluation and Development Strategy Research Center", a key think tank of Liaoning Province; Director of the Joint Blockchain Laboratory of Dalian University of Technology-China Electronics Standardization Institute; Executive Director of the Education Evaluation Branch of the China Association of Higher Education; Executive Director of the National Education Quality Monitoring Society. His research fields is meanly on University Governance and Performance Evaluation, Higher Education Measurement and Evaluation, and Big Data in Education.
